Aeromonas species isolated from PINTADO fish (Pseudoplatystoma sp): virulence factors and drug susceptibility Rev. Microbiol.
Rall,Vera Lúcia Mores; Iaria,Sebastião Timo; Heidtmann,Sandra; Pimenta,Fabiana Cristina; Gamba,Rosa Carvalho; Pedroso,Débora Midori Myaki.
Aeromonas has been described as an emergent foodborne pathogen of increasing importance. In this study, we report that 48% of 50 Pintado fish samples collected at the retail market of São Paulo city were positive for Aeromonas sp, as detected by the direct plating method. When the presence/absence method was used, the positivity was 42%. A. caviae was the most frequent species, followed by A. hydrophila and A. sobria. Production of cytotoxic enterotoxin, observed in suckling mouse assay, was detected in 67% of A. sobria strains, in 60% of A. hydrophila strains and in 40% of A. caviae strains. In vitro tests, performed with HEp-2 cells, showed that 88% of A. hydrophila, 27% of A. sobria and 13% of A. caviae strains were positive for this toxin. The in vivo...

Beauveria bassiana: quercetinase production and genetic diversity BJM
Costa,Eula Maria de M. B; Pimenta,Fabiana Cristina; Luz,Christian; Oliveira,Valéria de; Oliveira,Marília; Bueno,Elda; Petrofeza,Silvana.
Beauveria bassiana genetic diversity and ability to synthesize quercetin 2,3-dioxygenase (quercetinase) were analyzed. B. bassiana isolates, obtained from Brazilian soil samples, produced quercetinase after induction using 0.5 g/L quercetin. B. bassiana ATCC 7159 (29.6 nmol/mL/min) and isolate IP 11 (27.5 nmol/ml/min) showed the best performances and IP 3a (9.5 nmol/mL/min) presented the lowest level of quercetinase activity in the culture supernatant. A high level of polymorphism was detected by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. The use of internal-transcribed-spacer ribosomal region restriction fragment length polymorphism (ITS-RFLP) did not reveal characteristic markers to differentiate isolates. However, the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region...

A guarantee of quality of all steps involved in processing dental materials is essential to achieve security. A descriptive study was made of how Public Dental Medicine Colleges in Brazil process critical materials and determine the patterns of physical, chemical and biological control in their use of hot air ovens and autoclaves to sterilize these materials. The data were obtained with a questionnaire, sent by mail and analyzed with the software EPI-INFO 6.04. Among the 40 Brazilian public Dental Medicine Colleges, only 16 returned the questionnaire. In eight of these, the individuals responsible for the materials and sterilization center had a college degree in a human health field. In 14 institutions, the students were responsible for the cleaning of...

Extended-spectrum β-lactamases producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated in two hospitals in Goiânia/Brazil: detection, prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility and molecular typing BJM
Santos,Daniella Fabíola dos; Pimenta,Fabiana Cristina; Alves,Rodrigo; Montalvão,Edlaine Rodrigues; Santos,Daniela Braz dos; Carmo Filho,José Rodrigues do.
This study was developed to evaluate the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in two hospitals (A and B) in Goiânia, GO, Brazil. The antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates was determined using the MicroScan WalkAway (Dade Behring, USA). Tests to evaluate the genetic correlation between the isolates were also performed. For the ESBL phenotypic test, the Double-disk diffusion (DD) method was used. The strainsisolated in Hospital B were submitted to DNA analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The study showed high prevalence of ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae (25% in hospital A and 66.7% in hospital B), with high rates of antimicrobial resistance. The most active compound was imipenem (100%...

Lessons to learn with the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus control in Norway BJID
Cruz,Elaine Drehmer de Almeida; Pimenta,Fabiana Cristina; Andersen,Bjorg Marit; Gir,Elucir.
The prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Norway is low, compared to other European and American countries. The health system includes mandatory case reporting and has written guidelines for prevention and control. This communication describes the national public policies related to MRSA obtained from documents and academic experience gained during a doctoral fellowship in Oslo, Norway. The painstaking procedures used for investigating suspected cases, including health professionals, decolonization and case monitoring, could be important tools to be used by countries with a high prevalence of MRSA.

Molecular characterization of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from foods Rev. Microbiol.
Pimenta,Fabiana Cristina; Furlanetto,Sirdéia Maura Perrone; Mayer,Leonard W.; Timenetsky,Jorge; Santos,Manoel Armando Azevedo dos.
A total of 30 strains of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from different foods (16 of differents kinds of sausage, 14 cheese,) purchased at groceries of São Paulo City were ribotyped and analysed for the presence and expression of hemolysin gene and production of phosphatidylinositol-specific phosphalipase C - PI-PLC enzyme. The L. monocytogenes strains were differentiated into six ribotype classes. A total of 13 (43.3%) from these strains belong to the same ribotype (ribotype I), and was coincident to the ribotype of the standard L. monocytogenes prototype strain (ATCC-15313). The hemolytic activity was observed in 29 (96.7%) strains when incubated at 37oC, but not at 4oC. The direct colony hybridization method for hemolysin gene detection showed a...

Profile of antimicrobial resistance of bacteria isolated from cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) in a Brazilian health care institution BJID
Prado,Marinésia Aparecida; Gir,Elucir; Pereira,Milca Severino; Reis,Cleomenes; Pimenta,Fabiana Cristina.
Cockroaches carry microorganisms to sterilized materials, equipment and non-contaminated food in hospitals and in homes. Hence, they are regarded as major microbial vectors. We isolated and identified microorganisms from living cockroaches captured from a Brazilian health care institution and we determined the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of the isolates. Following collection, cockroaches were immobilized at 4ºC for 10 to 20 minutes, immersed in 0.8% saline solution and then homogenized. Next, the suspension was seeded in culture media: brain and heart agar infusion, MacConkey agar, Naito agar, and they were incubated for up to 48 hours at 37ºC. Sabouraud agar cultures were incubated at ambient temperature. The microbial colonies were analyzed with...

Progress towards meningitis prevention in the conjugate vaccines era BJID
Laval,Cristina Aparecida Borges; Pimenta,Fabiana Cristina; Andrade,João Guimarães de; Andrade,Soraya S.; Andrade,Ana Lucia S. S. de.
Acute bacterial meningitis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality among children less than five years old. Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis are the most important agents of bacterial meningitis in developing countries. The development of the conjugate vaccines in the beginning of the 90's, especially type b H. influenzae (Hib), and more recently the heptavalent pneumococcal and the serogroup C meningococcal vaccines, have contributed directly to changes in the epidemiological profile of these invasive diseases (direct effect) and of their carriage status (indirect effect). We review the impact of the Hib conjugate vaccine in Latin American countries, where this vaccine has been implemented, and the...
